Tiny Organics vs Yumi: What Is Best For Your Little One?

Tiny Organics vs Yumi: What Is Best For Your Little One?
Latest posts by Keith Lindner (see all)

If you have an infant at home who’s just starting on solids, you’re probably finding yourself constantly rushing around planning and prepping their meals. I can relate! I was in a similar situation when my toddler first came along. Transitioning from breast pumps to baby formula and then putting in some hours at work was very difficult to manage. There was no way that I could get through this without baby meal subscription plans.

Thus began my journey down the rabbit hole of looking into different baby meal delivery services. However, I know you probably neither have the time nor the patience to do all the research required. So, here’s a Tiny Organics vs Yumi comparison where I share my worst and best experiences using these baby food delivery services.

Main Differences Between Tiny Organics vs Yumi

The main differences between Tiny Organics vs Yumi are:

  • Tiny Organics meals have fewer options, whereas Yumi provides a variety of meal types for a range of age groups.
  • Tiny Organics containers are microwave safe, whereas Yumi jars are not.
  • Yumi meals are free of the Big-9 allergens, whereas Tiny meals are only free of the Big-8 allergens.

Tiny Organics: In-Depth Review

Tiny Organics vs Yumi

Tiny Organics is a great choice if you want ready-to-eat meals backed by science. Their meals are 100% plant-based and free of the Big-8 allergens. With plans prepared by a team of neonatal nutritionists and a chef, their meals are healthy for babies and taste delicious (at least in my experience, you can try them for yourself!).

Tiny Organics supports baby-led weaning (BLW) and ensures that meals make it convenient and efficient for parents who want to wean their babies off spoon-feeding methods. Now, I know not all parents agree on parenting methods when it comes to their babies. But Tiny Organics’ meals, while made with baby-led weaning in mind, are mushy enough even for those who wish to put off BLW for later.

If, like me, you’re worried about the nutrition value of your baby’s meals, then let me put your mind at ease. Tiny Organics partners with Tufts School of Nutrition & Policy. Their work reflects in their meals that are tailored to fit the needs of children during the growing ages. Let’s take a look at the ingredients that go into your baby’s Tiny Organics meals in detail.

Ingredients

Tiny Organics’ subscription plans offer over 100 flavors to choose from. You can find a good diversity of ingredients like oats, bananas, blueberries, ginger, coconut, and sweet potato, which make up their meal boxes. As mentioned, Tiny Organics meals are free of the Big-8 allergens. Here’s the list of allergens you won’t find in any of their meals:

  • Milk
  • Fish
  • Eggs
  • Soybean
  • Crustacean shellfish
  • Peanuts
  • Tree nuts
  • Wheat

If you want to check the ingredients for every meal, their meal containers provide all the ingredients included. Another thing you won’t find in a Tiny Organics meal is added sugars and salts. But that doesn’t mean their meals are tasteless.

Remember, their meals are plant-based. This means all the flavors you can taste are natural. Tiny Organics also uses some natural spices and herbs to make their meals more flavorful. Besides, there’s also the fact that there’s a professional chef involved in preparing their recipes. That’s got to be why Tiny Organics’ meals taste better than your homemade all-natural meals.

If you still want to make your baby’s meals yourself, here’s a little guide on the best products and techniques to help get you started.

Serving

Serving Tiny Organics

The best way to serve Tiny Organics meals is by heating them a little. Yes, that’s all you need to do — no other prep required!

To heat the Tiny Organics meals:

  • Take the lid of the meal boxes
  • Place the meal boxes in a microwave
  • Heat the mix thoroughly in 30-second increments
  • Take the boxes out of the microwave
  • Mix the blends and let them cool before serving them to your toddler

Storage

The Tiny Organics meal boxes must be immediately frozen upon delivery and only taken out when they’re ready to be consumed. If you forget to store the meals or find they have thawed in the fridge, then make sure to consume them within three days.

You will find that the Tiny Organics meal boxes come with the expiry date printed on them. This is the best-by date you should refer to for storing or using these meals.

The best-by date is in the following format:

MMDDYYX

The format follows the month-date-year order, and the “X” at the end refers to the internal batch number and has nothing to do with the date.

Meal Plans

Meal Plans

The meal plans are available in 12 or 24 container options and are delivered every 1, 2, or 4 weeks. All you need to do to get started is answer a few questions and select the frequency and the number of containers you’d like to receive.

You can also choose the recipes and meal plans while ordering or customize them at a later time. Simply visit their website, log into your account, and change your preferences. Tiny Organics also provides bigger meal sizes for the growing appetites of growing kids. However, they currently only offer three meal mixes as add-ons to your existing plan.

Packaging

Another factor to look into is the packaging that your meals are delivered in. Tiny Organics sends your meals in temperature-controlled containers along with dry ice. The outer covering is fully recyclable, and the green insulation that it comes with is biodegradable.

Tiny Organics: Pricing

Tiny Organics meal plans are affordably priced, with single meal container prices starting at $4.69. They also offer 12 pack gift orders for a price of $65.88 and 24 pack gift orders for $112.56.

Tiny Organics: Reviews

The popular opinion (and something I completely agree with) is that Tiny Organics meals are the best among plant-based baby meals. And the most loved feature among parents is the variety of flavors the company offers. Especially since the meals do not contain any sugar and salt.

Another reason why Tiny Organics meals are the talk among parents is the texture of the meals, which is mushy and soft enough for children to eat but also helps encourage the weaning-off process.

Yumi: In-Depth Review

Yumi

Made by nutritionists and pediatricians to ensure that your baby’s daily nutrient requirements are met, Yumi baby meals are the complete package for busy parents. The meal plans are designed for kids’ specific age groups, starting six months and going up to 11 months.

The soft meals are developed with BLW in mind and allow you to slowly transition your baby into the self-feeding and biting stages. Want to make the transition into self-feeding stages easier for your baby? Check out some fun cutlery products that you and your baby will love! (I love the 360-degrees Beaba spoon.)

Yumi meals are vegan, dairy-free, kosher, non-GMO, gluten, and preservative-free. Their meals are also 100% USDA certified organic by Organic Certifiers. The company prepares its meals with natural plant-based ingredients and presently has over 60 flavor options available.

The complete Yumi offerings include:

  • Purees
  • Finger foods
  • Pinchables
  • Bites
  • Fruit leathers
  • Puffs
  • Snacks
  • Vitamin gummies for adults, kids, and toddlers

Ingredients

Similar to Tiny Organics’ meals, Yumi meals don’t contain any added sugars either. The meals are sweetened naturally by the fruits and vegetables used in their recipes.

All the meals are free of the Big-9 allergens, including:

  • Milk
  • Eggs
  • Fish
  • Sesame
  • Crustacean shellfish
  • Tree nuts
  • Wheat
  • Peanuts
  • Soybean

Since their ingredients are fresh and 100% organic, the blends sometimes contain natural fibers from fruits and vegetables. This might be an annoyance to some kids and their parents.

Serving

What I liked about Yumi purees is that they can be served cold or warm.

If you want to serve the purees warm, you can do so easily by following these steps:

  • Put the puree into a microwave-safe dish (Yumi jars are not microwave or dishwasher safe)
  • Heat the blend thoroughly in 10-second increments
  • Put the puree into a small pan and heat it again for a minute on a low flame
  • Continue to stir the puree blend in the pan
  • You can then take the pan off the flame and allow the puree to cool down before serving it to your child

Note that you should never place the puree jars directly into hot water bowls as they aren’t resistant to high temperatures. Instead, use warm water if you must.

Storage

The Yumi purees are shipped chilled and can do fine in your refrigerator. The bites, however, must be stored in the freezer upon delivery. You can store the purees for up to 2 months in the freezer and seven days in the fridge. However, once opened, they should be consumed within 24 hours.

Make sure to remove the seal upon delivery and write the date on the jars to remember when you froze them. The expiration date is also available under the lid if you forget to note down the date.

Meal Plans

Tiny Organics vs Yumi: Milestone

Every Yumi puree comes in a 4-ounce jar that is color-coded for easy identification.

I also like the fact that the meals are divided into stages according to age groups. The different meals for each stage are prepared to provide the essential nutrients and vitamins to the toddlers.

Here is a breakdown of the different stages and who they are for:

Stage 1

Stage 1 group contains meals for children ages six months and above. The meals are made with single ingredients and have a much thinner consistency.

Stage 2

The second stage meals are for toddlers who have moved on to thicker blend varieties.

Stage 3

Stage 3 meals are designed for kids aged seven months and above and contain two ingredients.

Stage 4

These meals are designed for babies eight months and above who are ready to transition into multi-ingredient purees.

Stage 5

This stage includes textured purees with seeds and grains that are perfect for children nine months and above.

Stage 6

Stage 6 is for children ten months and above and contains real food pieces that promote self-feeding in children.

Stage 7

Stage 7 meals introduce nutrient-dense bites and are perfect for children aged 11 months and above.

Stage 8

These are meals for babies 11 months and above. The meal boxes introduce Sorghum flour puffs to kids.

You can change or alter the meals plans and preferences any time before the weekly deadline of 11:59 PT on Tuesdays.

Packaging

Tiny Organics vs Yumi packaging

All the packaging jars that contain the purees and blends are made from BPS/BPA-free plastic and are curbside recyclable.

Yumi meals, on the other hand, are shipped in temperature-controlled boxes with non-toxic and non-caustic ice packs and thermal liners made of recycled water bottles. This outer pack keeps the food fresh for 72 hours and is curbside recyclable.

Yumi: Pricing

The Yumi meal plans are available in three sizes depending on your baby’s needs. The plans start at a minimum price of $5 per day.

Here are some of the pack sizes you get with weekly and monthly billing options:

  • Eight jars delivered weekly for $35 billed per week or $28 billed per month
  • 16 jars delivered weekly for $65 billed per week or $52 billed per month
  • 24 jars delivered weekly for $90 billed per week or $72 billed per month

I found their monthly billing discounts of 20% a great budget saving option. I also like ordering the bottles since they can be stored for up to 2 months.

Military personnel, medical workers, first respondents, and teachers also get a discount of 10% on lifetime purchases.

What’s more? Yumi offers exciting referral plans and rewards programs to existing and new customers.

Are There Any Alternatives?

Little Spoon

Little Spoon

Little Spoon is the next best baby food delivery service I found during my research. Their products do not contain any of the Big-8 allergens, and they offer vegan and vegetarian options. What I liked about the Little Spoon meals was their cold-pressed processing techniques, as it ensures that maximum nutrition is retained from the raw materials.

Their product offerings include smoothies, baby blends, meal plates, and baby vitamins. And their pricing starts at as low as $2.74 per puree, $4.99 per meal, $2.50 per smoothie, and $5.99 per vitamin pack. Want to learn more about Little Spoon? The Verdict: Tiny Organics vs Yumi — What’s Best for Your Little One?

I didn’t find many differences in the quality of meals between Tiny Organics vs Yumi. However, both the baby food delivery plans cater to different parenting styles.

Tiny Organics is a better option for parents who are looking for meals that’ll help encourage their kids to self-feed. Yumi, however, is the most useful plan for parents who want custom-tailored meals for each month in the first year of their baby’s life.

For me, Yumi is a better option since the meals were more versatile and easier to incorporate into my toddler’s diet.
