Baby K’tan Original vs Moby Wrap Cotton

Baby K’tan Original vs Moby Wrap Cotton

It is no secret that the market today is flooded with an abundance of baby products and as parents, it is very easy to feel overwhelmed with all of the options and varieties available. What do babies really need and what can they go without?

Once you are lucky enough to have figured out what the essentials are, you are then faced with a new challenge – sorting through the countless choices of suppliers in each product category!

Bottom Line Up Front: Both of these are great wraps, however I slightly prefer the Baby K’Tan available here, especially if you aren’t sure how you might wear it (K’tan has more flexible carrying positions – 6 vs 4 for Moby).

Here at the Baby Swag, we know your time is valuable so we aim to help make your decision a little easier by doing the research for you!

Parents are catching on to baby-wearing and are reaping the benefits thereof. Using a wrap to carry your baby has several benefits including mimicking Kangaroo Care, providing an optimal learning environment, promoting a bond between you and your baby, saving space, and giving you and your baby a little privacy.

Learn more about the benefits of baby-wearing where we discussed in detail when reviewing the Baby K’tan Original Baby Carrier. Using a baby wrap to carry your little one is also more environmentally friendly than using a stroller.

Today, we are comparing the Baby K’tan Original Baby Carrier vs the Moby Wrap Cotton Baby Carrier, both serious contenders when it comes to claiming the title of best wrap on the market!

Baby K’Tan vs Moby Material

baby ktan

Both the Baby K’tan Original Baby Carrier and the Moby Wrap Cotton Baby Carrier are manufactured from 100% cotton. The material is strong, durable, and of good quality. The difference between the two wraps is in the way that it is worn.

Baby K’tan makes use of a patented double-loop design – In other words, the wrap consists out of two loops that can be manipulated in order to carry around your little one, whereas the Moby wrap simply consists out of one very long piece of material, 5 meters to be exact, that is folded in a variety of ways to carry your baby in.

We love that neither of these wraps contains any plastic belts, rings, or buckles, making it environmentally friendly and easy to keep clean. While the material is very breathable, many parents complain that the Moby wrap gets a little hot during the summer months. The reason for this is due to the length of the material.

The Moby Wrap is 5,5 meters, meaning the baby is often wrapped several times with one piece of material to keep the material from hanging on the ground. On the plus side, this provides a little extra warmth in the winter and also makes the Moby wrap a little more versatile as you can fold the material and use it as a pillow, a blanket, or anything you can think of when not worn.

Different Carrying Positions

Baby wraps can be extremely versatile, offering various positions for you to carry your baby in, depending on the weight of your baby. Each position has been carefully researched to ensure that you and your baby experience optimal comfort and that baby’s weight is evenly distributed so your back doesn’t suffer!

The Baby K’tan Original Baby Carrier offers six different carrying positions, including the Newborn Kangaroo position, Hug position, Two hip positions, Adventure position, Explore position, and the Hip position.

The Moby wrap Cotton Carrier currently offers four different carrying positions: Hug hold, newborn hug hold, hip hold, and the Kangaroo hold. Moby also sells a Mei Tai and Buckle Tie wrap which offers additional carrying positions.

Getting Wrapped

Getting in and out of your baby wrap can seem a little daunting at first and it might take some time for you and your baby to get used to. The key, according to successful baby-wearing moms, is to act confident and to wear your little one with confidence.

We suggest that you practice putting on the wrap in front of the mirror (I used a doll to practice with) and get used to the different carrying positions. Nothing will put you off baby-wearing as quickly as struggling to get the wrap into position while your baby is crying so take the time to do some research and practice!

Both the Moby wrap and the Baby K’tan Original have instructional videos and manuals available on the internet. Once you are confident with the different carrying positions, putting your little one into the Baby K’tan will be a breeze. Taking him or her out is just as easy and can be done without requiring any assistance.

Though it is not difficult to get baby in and out of the Moby Wrap, the length of the material can sometimes be problematic, especially to those with a smaller frame.

Due to the length, the material is often hanging on the floor while you are trying to get the wrap into position and while that is fine when you are in the comfort of your own home, it becomes a bit of a pain in the parking lot or the restaurant where the surface may not be so clean.

To prevent this, some moms do the wrapping before they leave home and simply put baby in once they arrive at their destination so if you don’t mind driving with your wrap on, this could be your solution.

Baby K’Tan Sizes and Moby Sizes

One of the major differences between the Baby K’tan Original and the Moby Wrap is its sizing. Baby K’tan is purchased in one specific size while the Moby Wrap is a “one-size-fits-all” wrap. Both of these methods have their pros and cons and depending on your personal needs, we believe that this will have a big influence in your decision-making process when it comes to choosing which wrap to buy.

The Baby K’tan Original Baby Carrier is available in XXM, XM, S, M, L, and XL. They offer a very convenient sizing calculator on their website to ensure that you are purchasing the correct size and advise that if you are in between sizes, opt for the smaller size.

The advantage of correct sizing is that the wrap provides a more secure, snug fit but on the down-side, you are the only one that will be able to wear the wrap (unless of course, you are extremely lucky in the sense that you and your husband/caregiver is the same size)!

The Moby Wrap is sold as a one-size-fits-all wrap, which means that anyone can use the wrap, not just you. It’s also very preferable to plus-size moms who often struggle to find a good fit when it comes to baby carriers.

You also don’t have to worry about getting the incorrect size and then having to return it if it does not fit. The disadvantage of the Moby wrap is that you are likely to have a lot of material left once you’ve wrapped your baby. This means that your baby needs to be wrapped several times again which causes both of you to get very hot in summer.

Baby K’Tan and Moby Weight Limitation

Both Baby K’tan and the Moby wrap are suitable for babies between 8 -35 lbs. Due to the length of the material used, the Moby wrap is slightly heavier compared to the Baby K’tan, though we will all agree that 0.3 lbs. won’t make much of a difference. The Baby K’tan wrap weighs in at only 1.3 lbs. and the Moby wrap, a mere 1.6 lbs.

Storage/packaging:

The Baby K’tan Original Baby Carrier is sold with a matching carry bag that is incorporated in some of the carrying positions as your baby grows older. We love that this bag is small enough to fit into a diaper bag/handbag and eventually becomes a part of the wrap itself.

The Moby Wrap also includes a convenient carry bag but comes in the shape of a small sleeping bag – there is a lot of material if you haven’t noticed by now. Though the wrap is stored neatly, it is certainly a little more bulky to carry around and doesn’t really fit inside an average-sized handbag/diaper bag.

Available Colors

moby

The Moby wrap is available in a whopping 31 colors, including a special baseball edition which is simply to die for if you are a fan! There is no shortage of variety when it comes to choosing a Moby Wrap. Baby K’tan Original is only sold in 4 different colors: Basic Black, Eggplant, Denim, and Heather Grey.

Though there are not many colors available to choose from, the colors are fairly natural so dad doesn’t have to worry about wearing neon pink out in public!

Baby K’tan does have other colors available but only in their Active, Breeze and Organic range. You can also find an array of different wraps from Moby, including the Classic, Evolution, Design Wrap, Meh Dai, the Buckle Tie and the Ring Sling.

Cleaning a Baby Wrap

Some wraps available on the market contain rings, plastic clips or buckles which sometimes makes it difficult (or impossible) to wash. Both Baby K’tan and the Moby Wrap consist out of material only, making it machine washable.

You can even tumble dry these wraps if you are strapped for time which earns bonus points in our books! Note that the Baby K’tan tends to stretch a little upon wearing but returns back to its normal size after it has had a good wash!

Back Support

Whilst these wraps are each used in a very unique and different way, both claim to have thoroughly researched their recommended baby-carrying positions, ensuring that baby’s weight is distributed evenly and providing optimum back support to baby-wearing moms and dads.

Durability

The Baby K’tan Original Baby Carrier and the Moby Wrap Cotton are both manufactured from 100% cotton. The material is of good quality and both these wraps should be able to last you for more than one child unless you drastically change in size which will deem the Baby K’tan either too big or too small.

Have These Products Been Recalled?

Neither of the Baby K’tan or Moby Wrap Cotton Carriers has been recalled, and the companies have made sure to provide sufficient information on how these carriers work, and how to use them without harming the baby.

Baby K’tan original vs Moby Wrap Cotton: Wrapping it up:

Even though we tend to lean a little more towards the Baby K’tan Original Baby Carrier when it comes to choosing our favorite, we firmly believe that both wraps are of exceptional quality.

The two major differences between the two wraps are the way in which the baby is wrapped and the sizing method. Choosing your favorite one will likely depend on what your personal needs are. If you are the only one who is going to be using the wrap, Baby K’tan certainly is a great option. It is tailored to your own body, contains 6 carrying positions, easy to put on/take off, and small enough to carry anywhere.

When to Go with the Moby Instead? On the other hand, if you are hoping to switch between mom, dad, and/or a caregiver when it comes to baby-carrying, the Moby wrap which is a one-size-fits-all, might be more suitable. The Moby Wrap Cotton Baby Carrier also offers a great variety of colors and is more versatile as it can be used as a blanket or a pillow etc. You also don’t have to worry about the sizing.

As always, it all comes down to what exactly you need. We can wholeheartedly recommend both wraps and trust that you will be satisfied with either one.

I Prefer the Baby K’tan Original
