The Best Forehead Thermometers for Babies and Toddlers

Next to blankets and diapers, a reliable thermometer is probably one of the single most important baby items you will ever need. It has the potential to save your little one’s life which is why it is so crucial to invest in an accurate, good quality thermometer.

Types of thermometers

thermometers

Not too long ago, mercury-filled thermometers were the only thermometers available. Fortunately, we have a great variety of thermometers to choose from today, including mercury and digital ear, anal, and forehead thermometers.

While anal thermometers claim to be a little more accurate than others, they are quite invasive to say the least and waking a sick baby only to stick a thermometer up their “you-know-what” will almost always lead to tears.

Mercury thermometers are also becoming less popular due to the risk they hold if they break. This is why we are taking a peek at the best forehead thermometers today.

Forehead thermometers give a good indication on whether or not fever is present and they are non-intrusive/non-invasive. You will also find that most forehead thermometers these days come with an ear and surface option. It is important to note that while these thermometers are suitable for newborns, babies, toddlers and adults, one should only ever use the ear function after a baby has reached the age of 3 months.

How it works?

Forehead thermometers rely on infrared technology that scans and measures the temperature of your temporal artery on the forehead. Most thermometers can take several readings within a second, translating the readings to either Celsius or Fahrenheit.

We love how quick and non-invasive forehead thermometers are and how easily one can take a temperate without having to wake a sleeping child. Most of these thermometers even have silent modes as well as back-lit screens, allowing you to take the temperature in the dark.

Accuracy

So having a digital thermometer makes life a whole lot easier. You can get quick readings almost instantly but the problem parents seem to face is accuracy. While most forehead thermometers are fairly accurate, there are some out there that may give false or inaccurate readings. To minimalize this, we suggest you go for a reputable, trusted brand and follow these easy tips:

  • Always keep the sensor clean
  • Ensure that batteries are charged (and always keep spare batteries at hand)
  • Avoid moist, sweaty spots when scanning the forehead
  • Take an average of three readings and use the reading which falls in the middle

When to be worried?

A fever should always be taken seriously as it is our body’s way of warning us that something is off. While we are not allowed to provide medical advice, it is always a good idea to seek medical attention if your child has a high or persistent fever, or a fever when under the age of three months.

Top 10 forehead thermometers for babies and toddlers

Finding accurate, reliable forehead thermometers proved to be a challenge even for us but we have searched wide and far to bring you only the best of the best – So here they are, in no particular order:

1. iYouCare Baby Forehead and Ear Thermometer

iYouCare Baby Forehead and Ear Thermometer

The iYouCare Baby Forehead and Ear Thermometer is fairly new on the market but already has raving reviews. The thermometer relies on infrared and can be used either on the forehead or the ear. It is suitable for the whole family. It also features an “object mode” which can be used to measure food, room temperature, or even bath temperature!

The iYouCare Baby Forehead and Ear Thermometer takes only a second to take a temperature and will let you know that it is done by sounding a beep. Results can be given via voice, but we love that this thermometer also has a mute option to avoid waking your baby in the middle of the night.

The thermometer will also indicate whether someone has a fever or not by means of the LED light: Green, indicating no fever; Orange, indicating a slight fever and red, indicating high fever.

The thermometer can store up to 35 readings and operates using 2 X AAA batteries. It can also switch between Fahrenheit and Celsius by opening the battery cover and flipping a switch. We quite like the travel case the thermometer comes in. It doesn’t make use of any disposable lens filters and perhaps adding a cap to protect the lens would be a nice addition when they upgrade this model.

When used in forehead mode, the TUMAMA Baby Ear and Forehead Infrared Thermometer can give results in just one second and provides warnings using a color-changing background: Red, orange and green. An alarm will also sound should you or your child have a temperature during a reading. Again, we appreciate that the alarm can be muted.

The Braun Forehead thermometer relies on two AAA batteries for operation but take note that it only displays temperature in Fahrenheit.

We also have to mention that while some swear by it, there has been an increase in complaints regarding their accuracy.

The Care Touch Digital Thermometer contains three different functions – An ear, forehead, and surface thermometer. You can even accurately measure the temperature of your little one’s milk bottle.

The thermometer will sound a warning if a fever is present and also features a helpful color fever indicator: Green, yellow and red. The color indicator is displayed underneath the display screen, along with a happy, neutral or sad face for easy reading. The Care Touch Digital Thermometer is a one-touch thermometer and displays accurate readings within one second.

We are particularly fond of the carry case. Most thermometers come with a carry bag made from a material, but this carry case offers just a little more protection when placed in your bag. It also contains lens caps to protect your thermometer, and you can change temperature readings from Celsius to Fahrenheit. It is, however, a little challenging to change settings such as time and date at first. The Care Touch Digital Thermometer uses 1 x CR2 battery and is suitable for infants, children, and adults.

In conclusion

As we’ve already mentioned, a thermometer is a must when it comes to babies and seeing that babies always tend to fall ill at night, we suggest that you are prepared. Always make sure you have spare batteries for your chosen thermometer and if you can afford it, keep a spare thermometer in the cupboard.

Always take along your thermometer when traveling (babies sure know how to keep you on your toes when you least expect it) and if your thermometer requires lens filters, be sure to stock up on those too as many won’t allow you to take a temperature without it.

We hope that you find a thermometer you love on our list and if you don’t already have one, be sure to add one of these amazing thermometers to your registry immediately!
