NannyCare vs Holle Formula: Which Baby Formula is Best?

NannyCare vs Holle Formula: Which Baby Formula is Best?
Latest posts by Keith Lindner (see all)

Sometimes, European baby formulas are a better and more reliable option than formulas you might already know of. And when it comes to European formulas, it’s easy to want to compare the NannyCare and Holle formulas.

They certainly have their differences, but they also aren’t made the same way, or with all of the same benefits or ingredients, so it’s not too difficult to tell them apart or make a decision between them based on what they both offer.

To be fair, they’re both made to give your little one all of the nutrients they’ll need for their entire first year, but other stages of both formulas offer nutrition even beyond that first year, which is a huge plus any way you look at it. But no formulas are perfect, and both options have their faults.

The Holle Stage PRE, for example, has lactose in it, and while the other Holle stages don’t, it can be a deterrent for some parents who may need a lactose-free formula for their little one. And the NannyCare Formula, while highly nutritious, isn’t organic like the Holle.

You don’t necessarily have to go organic when buying baby formula, but if that’s what you’re after for your little one’s formula, NannyCare, unfortunately, doesn’t offer the organic aspect.

On the other hand, NannyCare is made with unique small protein curds which make for easier digestion in most babies. And to Holle’s credit, it’s made with milk from cows that are raised on biodynamic farms (Holle also has a Goat formula, too).

Clearly, there are some big bonuses to each formula as well as not so great aspects you can’t quite get around. But before you make your decision about NannyCare vs. Holle formulas, it’s important to look at them both even more closely.

Bottom Line Up Front Summary: If you are specifically dealing with severe reflux issues, you’d probably do well to try the NannyCare over the Holle. But barring any reflux issues (both formulas are still MUCH better than generics here), the Holle Formula is definitely the best well rounded option here.

NannyCare First Infant Milk

NannyCare First Infant Milk

Although there are other stages available from the NannyCare First Infant Milk Formula, Stage 1 can be used right from birth, which makes it a suitable and healthy alternative to breastmilk. Or, if needed, it can be used in addition to breastmilk, since transitioning to NannyCare and back to breastmilk can be done with ease.

Although it’s not organic, the formula is made from milk from goats raised without added hormones or stimulants. It also has all of the nutrients and vitamins needed in your baby’s first year for proper mental and physical development. Unlike some other formulas, however, it doesn’t have any sucrose or glucose sugars added to the ingredients. For some babies, it can even help with constipation issues.

Where some formulas might make it more difficult to poop, NannyCare has smaller proteins that make it easier for your little one to digest his or her bottles.

It’s also a little easier to mix this particular formula, so there’s little to no clumping when combining the powder with water in your baby’s bottles. So even while NannyCare isn’t organic, it’s still made with healthy and safe ingredients for babies and toddlers alike.

Pros

  • Although it’s not organic, it’s still made with key ingredients found in breastmilk so your baby can get all they need.
  • It’s easy for most babies to digest this particular formula.
  • Mixing it is as easy as possible, without worry of leaving clumps behind on the inside of the bottle even after mixing.
  • Babies with colic symptoms and related stomach pain might find some relief using this formula over others.
  • There’s no added palm oil in any of the different NannyCare Formula stages.

Cons

  • Unlike the other stages, stage 3 of NannyCare doesn’t have OMEGA-3 ALA or OMEGA-6.
  • It might be a little too pricey for some parents, especially since it’s not an organic formula.
  • Some babies might have sturdy smelling stools after starting the NannyCare Formula.

Reviews

“This formula is easier to mix then Holle Goat formula. It’s not as “lumpy” and there is no goat milk taste whatsoever (I had to drank goat milk while traveling in Mongolia for three weeks so I’m unfortunately very familiar). Holle Goat has a very faint goat taste. Honestly, my baby drinks both just fine. This one works out to be a little cheaper when you factor in cost per gram, and it is easier to mix so I’ll be using Nanny Care from now on.” – Ming on OrganicStart.com.

“My baby is part breastfed part formula fed. This formula is seriously amazing. It doesn’t clump or have a weird smell. It’s an easy transition for my child between boob and this formula (she has taken it every single time). Also, knowing that it comes from a place that really cares about quality makes it worth it to me. People complain about the price but quality over everything, right? This is your child we’re talking about!” – Chloe on OrganicStart.com.

“Great product! After trying other cows milk formulas and having a little one with gas and belly pain we switched to Nanny Care and are so happy with it. My baby is drinking it and is happy and free from belly pain.” – Shelly on OrganicStart.com.

“This formula is liquid gold. My son has been suffering from eczema since I stopped breastfeeding at two months. We’ve tried every U.S. and European formula, and NannyCare is the only one that has completely stopped his eczema after drinking it for 24 hours. His poopy diapers started to look almost identical to those when he was breastfeeding.” – Lisa Kirby on OrganicStart.com.

Holle Organic Formula

Holle Organic Formula

If your goal is to find an organic formula that’s also a European formula option, then Holle Organic Formula might be your best bet. It’s made to have the ingredients and nutrition closest to those found in breastmilk, so you can be sure that your little one will get all they need when they drink the formula or switch to it from breastmilk. It’s completely organic formula made from the milk of cows raised on biodynamic farms.

This way, you can be sure that the cows from which the milk base comes from have been well treated and the resulting formula is free from additives. There are also no artificial flavors, or colors added, so the Holle Organic Formula is made only with the things your baby needs. Speaking of which, it does come in multiple different stages, including a final one for toddlers specifically.

If your little one needs to, he or she can legitimately use the formula from birth until they’re ready to transition to real milk or a milk alternative. Either way, you can be sure that with Holle Organic Formula, your baby will get everything they need for mental and physical development. (Read my full Holle Organic Formula review here!)

Features

  • Key Ingredients: The Holle Formula’s main ingredients include biodynamic skimmed milk, Vitamin A, and folic acid (with the goat formula substituting goat milk)
  • Child Age Range: Different stages offered by Holle include those for children from birth to six months old, six months – 10 months, 10 months and on, and 12 months and up.
  • Available Sizes: It comes in 400 gram boxes.
  • Price: Generally, I tend to see Holle Goat formula available for between $28 and $33 per 400 gram container. Definitely take advantage of our coupon codes (see below) to get the best price.
  • Where To Buy: Holle isn’t available on most online retailers, but IS available at these specialty retailers:
  • Has This Item Been Recalled?: There are no recent, or current recalls on the Holle Formula.

Pros

  • Some babies may have less spit-up when using the Holle Formula.
  • Since it’s organic, a lot of families can have peace of mind almost automatically.
  • Overall, the taste is a lot sweeter and easier to handle than that of other similar formulas.
  • It’s made with a lot of nutrients your baby will need for their first year and beyond.

Cons

  • There is palm oil in the ingredients of the Holle Formula at every stage, which some parents might not feel comfortable with.
  • Prebiotics are also missing from the key nutritional value in all stages. Depending on your perspective, this could be a positive (not wanted additives) or negative (not having built-in supplements).
  • When mixing it, there are quite a few bubbles, which don’t bode well for babies with gas issues (hint: mix a half serving of water in first, let sit for 30-60 seconds, then add the rest to help avoid excess bubbles).

Reviews

“My baby loves it, and we have never had any problems with it. No spitting up and no gas or colic. I love that is organic and from biodynamic farming. Glad I found it! USA needs to be a lot more strict on what they allow in our foods, especially baby formula as that is their only source of food for the first year of life for people like me who adopted and can’t breast-feed. To us, this is the next best thing.” – Heather W. on Amazon.

“Probably the best powdered milk available anywhere. Probably the most expensive, but then what price do you put on health? All organic, and biodynamic milk from alpine cows in southern Germany. It couldn’t be any better. And our baby loves it.” – Tuco Ramirez on Amazon.

“Rest assured parents this is the best alternative to breast milk that is on the market. My son is 8 mos. old, and we have supplemented with Holle 1 and 2 since he was two weeks old. I researched endlessly, and this was the only milk that was organic and did not contain harmful ingredients… My son’s digestion of this has been akin to breast milk. No upset stomach, no excessive spit up, gas, super stinky poo, etc.” – Jackie R. on Amazon.

“I have been using Holle to supplement my breastfeeding since my daughter was one month old. She is now one year old and just transitioned off of formula completely, but I used Level 1 all the way to Level 3 until she turned one year old. I also already ordered Holle Level 1 to prepare for my baby boy who is due in January. I can’t say enough great things about Holle.” – Ashley Vinson on OrganicStart.com.

The Verdict: Holle or Nanny Care?

Unlike some other formulas or baby products, it’s a little easier to compare NannyCare and Holle.

Because they aren’t made the exact same way or with all of the same ingredients, you can easily choose the stronger option and judging by all they offer and everything they both lack, the Holle Formula is the stronger option here, especially because of choice between Goat and Cow based lines. It offers organic ingredients and a mild taste for your little one and contains nutrient they’ll need for each stage.

Yes, the NannyCare Formula offers easy to digest ingredients, but when comparing both formulas, the Holle Formula is an easy choice here.

Final Thoughts on Holle versus Nanny Care

Sometimes, it’s not as easy as simply looking at the pros and cons of two formulas and picking one for your child to use for their entire first year. It’s entirely possible that they could try the formula and find that it doesn’t sit well with their stomach or causes reflux issues.

Bottom Line: In that case, you’d probably do well to try the NannyCare over the Holle. But barring any reflux issues (both formulas are still MUCH better than generics here), the Holle Formula is definitely a smart way to go.
