Things to think about when choosing baby formula

formula

There are plenty of things to consider when choosing the right baby formula for your child, but our biggest piece of advice is to not worry or panic. These are just some of the factors that we think are most important to start off with, but if you have any worries, concerns or questions then get in touch with your pediatrician for some further advice.

Does your child suffer from any allergies?

This is an important one, as you’ll need to ensure that the formula you choose contains ingredients suitable for your baby. Your child might be intolerant to cows’ milk or suffering from colic, so make sure that you check the ingredients list carefully and avoid anything that may not agree with your child.

At first, it’s unlikely you’ll know. Again don’t panic – in the first few months of feeding your child baby formula, keep a close eye on how they react and if you see any causes for concern, see your doctor straight away.

Find a taste your child will love

Easier said than done – we know! And it may sound obvious, but finding a formula your baby enjoys will make life so much easier for everyone.

Your child will feed more and grow more quickly, and you’ll have a much easier job feeding them. The taste and texture both play an important role in the overall success of the product itself, so try a few first to see which one your child takes to best.

Get the right formula for your baby’s age

Choosing an appropriate formula for your baby’s age is incredibly important. Formulas aimed at different age groups will contain vitamins and ingredients intended for specific stages in your little one’s development.

It’s so important that when purchasing your baby formula, you select one within your little one’s age range so you can be assured that it contains the right nutrition for your baby.

Choose a brand you trust

Unless you’re choosing a specific formula, like soy milk brands or baby formulas aimed at helping with colic sufferers, then you need to know that most formulas do the same job one way or another. If you’re super stressed over choosing one, we recommend using our review to help you decide.

The best advice we can give you is to choose a formula we have recommended and see how your baby takes to it. Choose a brand that you trust and start your journey into parenthood the right way.

Loulouka Baby Formula Review

loulouka

Loulouka Stage 1 Organic is a milk designed specifically to be as close to breastfeeding as possible. At Loulouka, they understand that if breastfeeding is not an option then you need to be giving your baby the next best thing. It’s even designed by parents, too.

The milk is produced in Switzerland, where they source the finest whole milk from their cow farms. They use coconut milk to absorb essential fats as a substitute for palm oil; a substance known to be incredibly destructive to our rainforests, so it’s a much more environmentally friendly option if this is something you care about. Loulouka claims that the blend of fats found in their baby formula can lead to better brain development and overall growth.

They also say that Swiss farms contain fewer cows, which means they live happier life with a reduced risk of disease being spread around the animals. Loulouka seems to truly care about their cows and as a result, over 50 quality assurance tests are carried out before their formula even leaves the factory.

In fact, sustainability is a key part of their manufacturing process and ethos. They support eco-friendly production; recycling waste heat, CO2 and wastewater. They love nature, work with local suppliers, and uses a sustainable packaging process. This is great news if you’re after a baby or toddler formula that genuinely cares.

So, are you ready for the long list of things this formula doesn’t contain? There are no genetically modified ingredients, no added sweeteners, no extra colors or preservatives, no soy, no maltodextrin, and no added eggs or nuts.

This is great news if you’re looking for an organic, healthy, unprocessed baby formula that’s designed to give your child the best start in life. Sometimes it can be scary not knowing what you’re giving your child, so Loulouka is earning a name for itself as a brand you can trust. This is a huge thumbs up.

Loulouka Alternatives | How other baby formulas compare

Holle Organic Formula

holle bio

Another European baby formula brand, Holle is more well-known than Loulouka and is manufactured in Southern Germany from grass-fed cows.

Much like Loulouka, they’ve created an organic cows’ milk formula using cows that graze on their biodynamic farms and lush green pastures. All farms used to adhere to Eu guidelines and regulations, so all animals are well treated and lead natural lives outdoors.

In terms of the formula itself, 99% of ingredients are organically cultivated. All their products contain no added nasties, including preservatives or colors, and Holle instead prefers to extract their ingredients from organic sources, like corn syrup and vegetable oils.

The biggest benefit of this is that your baby will be getting the essential fats, vitamins, and minerals needed for their growth and development from natural places, instead of overly processed, unnatural ingredients.

There are four main stages in the range:

This means that right from birth, you get a complete balanced formula that’s perfect for your child’s next stage in life. Like we mentioned earlier, it’s very important to feed your child the right formula for their age.

The biggest downside to Holle is that it uses palm oil. Not only is this ingredient linked to the destruction of the world’s rainforests (which makes this baby brand relatively environmentally unfriendly) but it can internal discomfort in babies, leading to harder, more painful stools.

Your baby may not have any issues consuming palm oil at all, and this is certainly something we hope for, but keep a keen eye on this. If you do notice a change in your child’s stools, contact your pediatrician to get advice on switching baby formula straight away.

Features:

  • Suitable from birth
  • The milk comes from alpine cows in Southern Germany
  • Non-GMO
  • Contains biodynamic skimmed milk, folic acid, and vitamin A
  • Very close to the taste and texture of breast milk
  • Suitable for bottle-feeding

Pros:

  • It’s an organic formula, which is generally seen as a more premium option
  • Has a pleasant, sweet taste that many babies enjoy
  • It’s packed with key nutrients your baby needs in their early stage
  • It’s not a soy-based formula

Cons:

  • It uses palm oil which, for the reasons we’ve already discussed, isn’t a great ingredient
  • It misses some important prebiotics
  • When mixing, you may find a few bubbles, which won’t be suitable for babies suffering from gassiness

Try Holle

Which is the better option?

It’s always tough when you compare a well-known brand to one that’s pretty much just starting out but actually, Loulouka proves that it’s a serious contender in the baby formula market – which is already saturated with too much variety and choice.

Not only is their cows’ milk organic, but their welfare standards are extremely high. It’s also a better option if you’re more conscious of the environment, thanks to their commitment to create a better, more environmentally friendly world. The fact too that it’s made by parents shows that the Loulouka manufacturers really know their stuff and that their formula has come from a place of knowledge, experience, and research.

Holle is always going to be a popular brand and one we’re always happy to recommend, but in this instance, the fact they still use palm oil is a major downside. It can have health effects on your baby and it’s just simply not sustainable in today’s current marketplace.

Overall, Loulouka is well worth a try – you may just find it a bit trickier to get hold of while it’s still getting its name out there.

FAQs

Question: Can Loulouka Baby Formula be combined with breastfeeding

Answer: Yes, it’s totally safe. Loulouka Organic Infant Formula is a complete breast milk substitute for feeding newborns and infants, so you can either cut out breastfeeding completely or combine it with your own milk.

Question: How quickly do I need to use my powder formula once opened?

If stored properly, your baby formula should last for about 1 month. We recommend keeping any powdered baby formula in an airtight container and storing it in a cool, dry place – like a cupboard or pantry. As Loulouka contains no added preservatives, it won’t last as long as formulas that do contain them if exposed to air, so always store it correctly to keep it fresh for longer. This is probably the only downside to not using preservatives!

Question: After all that, my baby doesn’t like the formula I’ve chosen. Help!

Answer: Don’t worry – there’s always a risk that this might happen. It might be the taste, it might be the texture; who knows? If they really don’t like it and don’t seem to be feeding too well, then switch. It’s perfectly safe to do so and it will be better for them in the long run.  If you’re really struggling to find something which works, we recommend speaking to a pediatrician for some expert advice.

The Bottom Line: Is Loulouka Worth it?

While relatively new and unknown, Loulouka baby formula is a great option and is a solid substitute for breastmilk. With plenty of sustainability promises and premium quality ingredients, we don’t think it will be long before it becomes a brand you’ll know and love, so watch this space…

Whichever you decide, take into account all the points we mentioned above, including the taste, the stage of formula your baby needs and whether your baby has any allergies. If your child has an intolerance to cows’ milk then both brands are out – but there are other alternatives you can use instead, like Kabrita goats’ infant milk formula.

We really hope this article has helped you to make a decision and we would love to know what you think of either brand. Please get in touch with any feedback or further questions you may have, as we want to hear from you!
