Kendamil vs Hipp: Which Baby Formula Is Safer?

Kendamil vs Hipp: Which Baby Formula Is Safer?
Latest posts by Keith Lindner (see all)

It is never a walk in the park for most parents shopping for baby formula. And this is almost entirely due to the long lists of ingredients, intimidating medical and nutritional jargon, unpleasantly long and detailed regulations, and of course the little to no time to juggle between nursing and researching. It is for these reasons that we have a detailed comparison between Kendamil vs Hipp to help you make an educated decision.

One that can only be drawn after getting the right synthesized information about the formulas’ ingredients, their honest user reviews, their pros weighed against their cons, and of course alternatives in case the two run out of stock or don’t sound just right for your baby.

Main Differences Between Kendamil vs Hipp

The main differences between Kendamil vs Hipp are:

  • Kendamil contains only Prebiotics Via GOS as Probiotics are not allowed by the British Soil Association, whereas Hipp formulas contain both prebiotics and probiotics.
  • Kendamil is available both offline and in stores, whereas Hipp can only be purchased online for US residents (others can access it both in stores and online).
  • Kendamil is available in only one version, whereas Hipp has 3 combiotic versions (Hipp UK, Hipp Dutch, and Hipp Germany).
  • Kendamil doesn’t use maltodextrin in any of its formulas, whereas Hipp uses Maltodextrin (cheaper and harmful lactose alternative) in some formulas.
  • Kendamil does not use either palm oil or fish oil in any of its formulas, whereas Hipp uses Palm oil and fish oil (breast milk-like fatty acid that can be tough on tiny tummies) in some formulas.
  • Kendamil is headquartered in  the UK, whereas Hipp is headquartered in Germany
  • Kendamil has palmitic acid that enhances fat and calcium absorption in the intestines, whereas
  • Hipp does not have palmitic acid.

Hipp vs Kendamil Compared

Kendamil vs Hipp compared

With both having almost similar regulating authorities, closely mirror organic compounds, a manufacturing history stretching over decades, and a shared vision of feeding babies with the safest, nutritious, most natural breast-like baby milk, they surely do deserve a seat on the leaders table. To start us off is Hipp;

Hipp – In Depth

Kendamil vs Hipp: hipp 1

Boasting of an entirely organic line of baby products, with over 260 stringent safety checks, a vision and mission of leaving babies’ tummy full and comfortable, is Hipp. A family run business that has dedicated itself to sustainably providing babies superior nutritional organic formulas since 1960.

Born out of a need to supplement breastmilk for their twins in their humble bakery in Germany, Pfaffenhofen (in the Bavaria region), Hipp has exponentially grown over the years to their current 3 Combiotic versions made for UK, Dutch, and Germany markets (here is a detailed review).

As a pioneer in organic baby formulas, Hipp has by far gone above and beyond the set EU standards of organic formula composition. Their closely monitored process of transforming grass-fed cow products to portable organic baby formulas is but impressive. Below is a quick peek into the main macronutrients of their organic products;

Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates form the main source of energy in infants with lactose being the most common as babies – except those who are intolerant – have the ability to digest it as they have lactase, an enzyme that breaks lactose.

Other than being the main energy source for mental and physical development, lactose aids in calcium absorption as well as maintains a healthy population of good gut bacteria. And being that formulas are to supplement or replace breast milk, it is but a no-brainer that formulas contain lactose.

It is based on these premises that Hipp exclusively uses lactose as the main energy source in all – except Hipp Anti-Reflux that has maltodextrin – its formula.

Protein

From being a source of energy to being used in making new cell organelles, the use of protein can never be overemphasized enough. This might be the reason why breast milk is almost entirely protein with casein having a composition of 40% to 60% whey proteins.

To closely mimic these compositions, Hipp formulas use whey protein that has a similar protein ratio as breast milk to ensure your baby gets nothing short of a replica. Those with sensitive tummies are not forgotten either. Their specially made Hypoallergenic formulas and Anti-Reflux formula consist of 100% whey protein that is hydrolyzed to make it easy for their delicate distressed digestive tracts.

Fats and oils

With over 60 different fatty acids in breast milk – fats are purposed to serve both as building blocks, insulators, and shock absorbers around major organs – and as energy sources. Their high composition is an indication of the essential role they play.

Not known to fall short of standards, Hipp formulas packs palm oil that is sustainably sourced and supplements it with vegetable oil in the name of sunflower and rapeseed oil. All these are naturally produced and sustainably sourced in quantities and qualities as per stringent Europe organic guidelines.

Prebiotics and Probiotics

Kendamil vs Hipp - Hipp formula feeding

Probiotics is a fancy name for beneficial bacteria in a baby’s digestive system while prebiotics is the food to these beneficial bacteria. Both the probiotic and prebiotic are found in breast milk and their role includes improving immune response, reducing colic, and minimizing chances of eczema in babies.

Not to compromise your baby’s health, Hipp has seen to it that all its products, including the Hypoallergenic and Anti-Reflux formulations, are packed with both probiotics and prebiotics that are similar to those in breast milk.

DHA and ARA

DHA and ARA are long polyunsaturated (poly means many) Omega 6 and 3 fatty acids that play a crucial role in vision, boosting the immune system and enhancing better cognitive capabilities. Privy to these DHA and ARA benefits, Hipp formulas safely derive these long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids from fish or vegetable oil to ensure that your baby is not deprived of its associated benefits.

Hipp Reviews

Contended customers noted that it was great especially in easing colic, is digestible and has a sweet taste that has seen most of their infants guzzle Oz after Oz. Others concur and add that it does help reduce reflux and even make the baby poop more often which can be a sign of things going well.

A few of those who have registered disappointment with the product cite that Hipp is not readily available, some of its formulas have a flat unpleasant taste, is pricier compared to other formulas and that leaves some babies gassy and fussy.

Kendamil

kendamil formula

As a lead manufacturer of healthy, safe, and organic baby formulas, Kendamil (see all kendamil stages) sources whole milk and other animal products from organically fed and humanely raised animals from the beautiful plains of Yorkshire, Kent, and Somerset, plant-based ingredients from the sprawling and expansive Red tractor accredited farms in Cumbria and Lancashire. And that is not all.

To better actualize this dream of safe and organically nutritious baby formula, Kendamil meets and exceeds all regulatory guidelines including British Soil Association and EU.

Additionally, to ensure that the formulas are top grade, they never skimp on ingredients and instead, go for the most natural pediatrician-approved (see its benefits here)ingredients that include lactose, prebiotics before sweetening them all with whole milk. Below is a brief preview of its main macronutrients;

Carbohydrates

As the main source of energy for infants, carbohydrates need to be carefully selected. And the best source for Kendamil is Lactose, similar to the one found in breast milk, and as recommended by the European Commission (Requires minimum of 30% in organic-based formulas) and the American Academy of Pediatricians. But why Lactose?

Lactose is the ideal energy source as it releases energy intermittently, plus babies naturally secrete lactase, an enzyme that breaks down lactose leaving babies healthy and full for longer. This is sourced from whole milk obtained from grass fed cows grazing on the lush organic grass in the plains of Yorkshire.

Proteins

Being the main building blocks for the rapidly developing infant cells and tissues, protein composition needs to mimic proteins in breast milk, but still change soon enough to reflect the changing needs of the infants. That is why Kendamil uses both whey and casein in different ratios over time.

For stage 1, Kendamil formula opts for 60:40 whey to casein ratio while for the stage 2 formula, Kendamil reverts them to 40:60 so as to prep the babies for weaning.

Fats and Oils

Known for it is “no palm oil no fish oil approach”, Kendamil relies on a unique whole milk recipe (has more natural fat) for fats making it possible to use almost negligible amounts of vegetable oils.

A brilliant choice you could say, for the benefits of whole go beyond being a filler in the formula. Whole milk’s Milk Fat Globule Membrane (also found in breast milk) has been shown to have a positive correlation with improved cognitive development in infants.

Prebiotics and Probiotics.

Being under the regulation of British Soil Association (More strict than the EU), Kendamil does not contain any Probiotic. To make up for this stringent guideline, Kendamil uses Prebiotic via GOs to ensure that, despite the ban, your nutritious Kendamil baby formula is still full of food for naturally occurring gut microbiomes.

Kendamil vs Hipp: kendamil organic

DHA and ARA

Unlike other organic formulas that go for cheap and unhealthy fish oil for DHA, Kendamil, pursuant to its no fish oil approach, physically decants DHA-rich Algal oil from wet biomass thus avoiding fish allergens and also safeguards our rich aquatic fauna.

This natural process sees to it that no solvents are used, leaving the formula with not only a pleasant smell, but a great taste too.

Reviews of Kendamil

Most happy customers noted that Kendamil did not upset their babies’ tummies nor leave them with nappy rashes.

They also indicated that with Kendamil, colic, vomiting, spit up or excessive passing of wind is a thing of the past. Others have praised the fact that Kendamil left their babies napping better, being more content, and going for hours without wind pain and crying as is the case with many other formulas.

The downside to Kendamil lies in its exclusive milk product use that leaves some babies with runny tummies and skin rashes.

Our Verdict: Kendamil vs Hipp – Which is better?

With dozens of brands and a whole range of varieties available, figuring out what best suits your baby and is within your budget can be a herculean task, especially for the ever-busy caregivers, who want nothing but the best for their babies.

It is why we compiled the organic formulas above like Kendamil vs Hipp that are free of GMOs, additives and are compliant with relevant regulations. But the question still remains, which is the best of the two?

Though the German Hipp features some undesirable ingredients like maltodextrin and starch, its other types in the name of Hipp Dutch and Hipp UK are testimony of why their following and usage has turned out to be cult-like.

With demineralized whey milk and whole milk that has MFGM known to bolster immunity, and improve mental development, Hipp formula may be the one nutritious formula your baby has been longing for.

For caregivers looking for nutritious, wholesome ingredients with all the certifications that matter, Kendamil is all you need.

Sustainably produced with only organic ingredients, no palm oil, no fish oil, no gluten or GMO and maltodextrin means that your Kendamil nutritious baby formula is made to see to it that the beautiful bundle of joy you have, develops into a healthy, strong and smart toddler. This makes Kendamil our obvious favorite.
