One IS Better: Ergobaby vs Baby Bjorn Comparison [2021]

Ergobaby Carrier vs. Baby Bjorn

In order to find the right baby carrier to keep both you and your little one happy, it needs to meet a few essential requirements. It has to be affordable of course, but it also needs to be breathable, have a long life in terms of its weight limit, and it really does need to have more than one possible position to place your baby in.

That being said, looking at the Ergobaby Carrier vs BABYBJORN Baby Carrier, they both meet some of that criteria in similar ways.

They can both be used with infants and from the time your child is a newborn, which is a definite bonus. They’re both also made of a breathable cotton material that will keep your baby comfortable while they’re strapped against your body.

But, as to be expected, there are some stark differences as well. When you have two products meant to do the exact same thing, it’s hard to really look at them individually and see their strengths and weaknesses, but it’s important to try.

While the Ergobaby is more versatile in that it can be used for older and larger babies, the Baby Bjorn is considerably less expensive. Then again, the Ergobaby has a thick band meant to add lumbar support, whereas the Baby Bjorn doesn’t have any added support in place for you while you wear your baby.

At the end of the day, personal preference does come into play. Still, I had some clear preferences depending on the use case and situation.

Bottom Line up Front: Personally, I would much rather have a carrier that works well for both infants and toddlers. This is why my choice is to go with the Ergobaby here. Although if you really prize the front facing features, the Baby Bjorn is still a solid option for infants.

Main Differences Between Ergobaby vs Baby Bjorn

The main differences between Ergobaby vs Baby Bjorn are:

  • Ergobaby has an additional band which adds lumbar support, whereas Baby Bjorn does not have it.
  • Ergobaby is available in 17 different designs, whereas Baby Bjorn only in 5.
  • Ergobaby is made of cotton, whereas Baby Bjorn is made of polyester.

I Personally Prefer the Ergobaby Here

Put simply, the Ergobaby is more usable for longer as you can use it for BOTH infants or toddlers. The additional lumbar support band and infant inserts enable a much longer use cycle, all the way up to 45 pounds.

Ergobaby Original

ergobaby original carrier

From multiple positions to the ergonomic M-shape that it keeps your baby in at all times, the Ergobaby Original Carrier really does offer a lot in terms of convenience, safety, and comfort.

In all three possible positions, your baby’s legs will be in the hip healthy M-position and you can start using the carrier as soon as you think your infant is ready for it, all the way up to 45 pounds without even needing to switch over to a new carrier to hold the extra weight instead.

Not only does the carrier have two padded straps that can be adjusted according to whoever is wearing it, but it also has a thick band that can be buckled around the waist for added lumbar support. It may not be the easiest task to get in and out of the carrier on your own and without any help, but once you have it on, your baby will feel as secure as you will, with no worries about him or her falling out.

There’s even a convenient zippered storage pocket on the front of the carrier for easy access and the entire carrier is machine washable.

  • The large storage pocket is conveniently placed and can be used for pacifiers, a phone, keys, or wallet.
  • All three positions that are offered with the Ergobaby keep your baby’s legs in the proper M-position.
  • There’s also a hood that protects from the sun and privacy if you want to nurse while wearing your baby in the carrier.
  • The lumbar band adds extra support of course, but it also adds comfort and another level of safety to the Ergobaby.

  • Some parents might not like the fact that you have to purchase the newborn insert separately to use the carrier for your small infant.
  • The one position you can’t place your baby or toddler in is facing outward, which might be a deal breaker for some.
  • It can be challenging to get in and out of the carrier on your own.

“This is a great shower gift and of course a good gift for the coming Christmas season. It makes either a great front carrier or a back carrier and will definitely do the job until the baby’s toddler age. It’s reasonably priced and is all a prospective mother could hope for.” – Neal Reynolds on Amazon.

“I love this baby carrier and use it nearly every day. It’s my fourth Ergo carrier I’ve owned (nothing was wrong with the others either, I just wanted a new color) and it’s a must have for any parent. Our one year old brings it to us to go ‘uppies’ and I’ve even put my eight year old in it when her legs got tired on a hike. Very sturdy, cute, and so convenient.” – Travis Lockhart on Amazon.

“I tried a baby wrap, but found it so confusing and would always seem to fit differently each time I put it on. It was more trouble than I had time for. When I bought this carrier, I fell in love! I snapped it on and put my baby in and he felt so light! I was able to walk around and get chores done while he slept.” – Mariel Falk on Amazon.

“Love this carrier and can’t say enough good things about the Ergo! This print is especially adorable! This is the only way my little one will nap when we are out on the go, as she refuses to fall asleep in her stroller. Strap her into this and she is out within a few minutes!” – M. Etheridge on Amazon.

Baby Bjorn Original Carrier

Baby Bjorn Original Carrier

If you’re not very experienced with baby carriers, then the Baby Bjorn Original Carrier may honestly be the best option for you.

It’s simple in its design and meant for infants and smaller babies, so you won’t be wearing your toddler on your chest, and it offers two different positions in order to keep your baby as comfortable as possible. While it does not provide the lumbar support band that he Ergobaby has, it does have thick adjustable straps that crisscross on your back to provide ample support while wearing your baby.

And really, there are just a few buckles and straps to get used to when fastening and securing the carrier on your body, so it’s very user-friendly in that regard. Although it’s meant for smaller babies, that doesn’t mean that you won’t still be able to get moths of use out of it before your little one grows out of it. This means that the adjustable head support will come in handy and keep your child comfortable even as he or she grows.

  • Positions: You can wear it as a front inward facing carrier or front facing out.
  • Materials Used: The carrier is made from 100% cotton, much like the Ergobaby Original.
  • Baby Bjorn Weight Limit: The Baby Bjorn is meant for babies from 8-25 pounds.
  • Price: Check out the latest price on Amazon
  • Where To Buy: You can find it on Amazon or in store at Buy Buy Baby.

  • Even when you’re on your own with no outside help, the carrier is easy to get on and off.
  • At less than $100 and meant to be used until the age of one for some children, you’ll likely get your money’s worth.
  • Unlike the Ergobaby, the Baby Bjorn also offers a front carrying facing out position, which is the most ideal for some babies.
  • It’s also small and lightweight, so you can take it with you wherever you go without any inconvenient bulkiness.

  • The shoulder straps can sometimes dig into your shoulders in a way that’s especially uncomfortable over time.
  • Since it’s meant for babies up to 25 pounds, you won’t be able to get used of it past your child’s first birthday.
  • The leg openings allow for enough room for most babies, but there is no standard M-shaped position to promote healthy hip development.

“I don’t normally write reviews unless it is an outstanding product. This is an outstanding product. My baby will only stop crying and fussing if she is next to me. I can easily strap her into it in less than a minute… This is so easy to put on and adjust. Just four clicks and done.” – Jamie Rainey on Amazon.

“Couldn’t live without it. Wife and I have very different schedule so with baby and walking both dogs it is a life saver. Easy enough for one person to put baby in safely. Calms him down when fussy. That is a huge plus.” – Walter Sanford on Amazon.

“By far one of my most used and favorite things I have purchased for my son. It looks confusing when you first take it out, but it’s so super simple once you test it out. My son sleeps the entire time he is in this. He is very close to me, and you can tell the position this carrier allows him to be in relaxes him greatly!” – J. Rodriguez on Amazon.

“Love this item it’s perfect. I am a large woman and was worried that an item like this would not fit me properly. But I decided to try it. It’s perfect for any shape or size parent. My husband and I are exact opposites in body size, and this adjusts perfectly for both of us. Our baby loves being in it. It’s sturdy and safe.” – Amie Wickersham on Amazon.

UPDATE: Ergobaby 360 vs Baby Bjorn One

While Both Ergobaby and Baby Bjorn still sell the originals, the newer iterations deal with some of the objections. Namely, the new Baby Bjorn One is now rated for infants and toddlers, while also allowing multiple positions. Meanwhile, the new Ergobaby 360 allows for front-facing little tykes (as the “360” name implies).

Overall: the main distinguishing factor for me is that I much prefer the material and support of the Ergobaby 360 here, so Ergo is still my choice.

I Personally Prefer the Ergobaby Here

Put simply, the Ergobaby is more usable for longer as you can use it for BOTH infants or toddlers. The additional lumbar support band and infant inserts enable a much longer use cycle, all the way up to 45 pounds.

The Verdict: Ergo Baby or Baby Bjorn?

You probably couldn’t go wrong in choosing either the Ergobaby Carrier or the Baby Bjorn, but when it comes down to it, there is obviously a superior choice, which is the Ergobaby.

It might cost a little more and be a little more complicated in terms of actually getting it on and securing it into place, but it also offers a much longer span of usage as well as comfort for both you and your child. Unlike the Baby Bjorn, it doesn’t offer a facing out position, but with the positions that it does allow you to use it for, your child can still get comfortable and enjoy all of the benefits of a larger carrier meant for both babies and toddlers.

Plus, you get a convenient storage pocket and a hood that can be used to protect your child from the sun or to simply allow him or her to sleep while you wear them in the carrier, which they will inevitably want to do.

FAQ’s About Ergobaby vs Baby Bjorn

Do Baby Bjorn carriers cause hip dysplasia?

Slings and baby carriers can cause hip dysplasia, especially in the first few months of a baby’s life, considering their bones are not still developed, so it is best to avoid using them until your baby grows a bit, and if you have to use them so soon, try to put your baby’s legs around your hips as this is the only correct posture for them to be in.

When can you use Ergobaby without insert?

You can start using the Ergobaby infant carrier without head insert once your baby is older than 4 months. Keep in mind though that the insert provides more comfort, especially when they nap.

How long should I let my baby be in a carrier?

When it comes to wearing the baby in a carrier, there is no correct answer on how long you should wear your little one in it. However, keep in mind that newborns need to be in it for 15 minutes before making a break since they bones are not developed yet. Babies that are older, usually show signs when they are not comfortable in a certain period, so you will know when it’s time to switch a position or to make a break.

Final Thoughts

A baby carrier probably isn’t the essential baby product you’ll need, but as the reviews of both of these particular carriers will tell you, one of the most significant benefits is in being able to wear your baby while you take care of chores or other tasks around the house.

This enables you to be hands-free while also giving your child a different experience than simply a baby swing or bouncer seat. Really, investing in a carrier like the Ergobaby means adding another useful baby accessory into your life and into your baby’s life as well.

As with all baby products, choosing the one that best suits you is always the way to go, but in this instance, the stronger of the two carriers is going to be the Ergobaby, which would be beneficial to both you and your child in the long run.

Bottom Line: Personally, I would much rather have a carrier that works well for both infants and toddlers. This is why my choice is to go with the Ergobaby here. Although if you really prize the front-facing features, it is still a solid option for infants.

My Favorite Ergo Carrier | Ergobaby

While there are a lot of good baby carriers, my all-time favorite is this Ergo 360 Mesh carrier. You can use it front or back and the mesh is perfect for air circulation on those warm days (sweaty babies!). Definitely check this one out.
