Britax Affinity Stroller Review: Worth the Money?

Britax Affinity Stroller Review: Worth the Money?

If you’re considering buying a stroller for your new arrival, our Britax Affinity review might be able to help you narrow down your search.

Britax are a great brand. Founded in Britain way back in 1938, they focused primarily on safety (by developing adult car seat belts). They maintain that focus on safety today, having moved into producing childcare products like strollers, car seats, and highchairs.

Britax have produced several excellent strollers and travel systems over the years, and the Britax Affinity is designed to be hard-wearing enough to grow with your child, especially if used with a bassinet or infant car seat.

We’ll take a look at the main features of the Affinity, before looking at it in more detail, including its design, comfort and safety, ease of use, and extra features. We’ll also look at what users say about it, and the pros and cons – so you can see if it’s the right fit for your family.

The Main Features of Britax Affinity

britax affinity

The Britax Affinity is a simple, functional stroller that can be used from six months through to around five years (55lbs). The main selling point of the Affinity is the ergonomics – thanks to the suspension and adjustable push bar, it’s super-smooth to push, which is a great bonus if you want to take long walks (even on slightly bumpier sidewalks).

It can be used as a travel system if you want to buy a matching bassinet and infant car seat. If you don’t want to buy the Britax car seat or bassinet, you’ll only be able to use it from six months upwards. It’s a great stroller for toddlers, as it’s still comfortable, but it’s easy to push even as your child gets bigger.

The Affinity has actually been discontinued, so they won’t be making more. However, it’s still widely available online, and Britax continues to manufacture the parts, so you can get replacements if you need to. It remains a good seller on Amazon despite no longer being manufactured.

Here’s a quick overview of what you can expect from the Affinity:

  • Can be used as a travel system
  • Adjustable suspension and push bar
  • A good-sized storage basket underneath
  • Rain cover included
  • Air-filled tires

Britax Affinity Design

The Affinity is not as stylish as other strollers out there – it’s not as ‘trendy’ as other models that have more exciting color combinations or super streamlined frames – but it looks fairly lightweight, not as bulky as other strollers that are designed to work as part of a travel system.

It doesn’t have any noticeable rivets or weld marks on the frame, and the quality of the materials is of a high standard. It’s available in white, red, and black currently (there were more color options previously but as it has been discontinued, some of the harder-to-get colors have sold out).

It can be used in four ways:

  • Parent-facing (using the bassinet, bought separately)
  • Parent-facing (using Britax infant car seat, bought separately)
  • Parent-facing (using stroller seat)
  • Forward-facing (using stroller seat)

The stroller itself is suitable for babies from six months up to around five years (55lbs).

Having the parent-facing option built-in using the included seat is a good thing. It’s great that these are becoming more common, as it allows parents to communicate with their older babies and toddlers even once they’re past the infant car seat/bassinet stage.

For inquisitive babies that like to sit upright and gaze around, they can still face outwards (from six months). It’s good to have the option here, and if you do choose to purchase the compatible Britax bassinet and car seat unit, you’ll have a lot of choices as your baby grows.

It’s a sturdy stroller made of good quality materials, so you can expect it to last throughout your child’s stroller-using years (and many parents have used it with subsequent children too).

Comfort and Safety

affinity stroller

The Affinity is pretty comfortable for your baby, but if you want them to be really cozy, you’ll have to purchase a few extras. The Color Pack is an accessory pack that includes a cozy seat liner and a sunshade.

It’s a shame that these items don’t come with it – the sunshade, in particular, is a must-have. If you have a baby under one, it is recommended that you buy the Color Pack for the extra comfort it will provide. The basic stroller comes with a safe five-point harness, and the shoulder straps are adjustable.

The seat itself has four recline positions and has a good amount of padding for toddlers and older children. Although it doesn’t recline in as many positions as other strollers, you should find the four positions are enough for your child if they want to lay back and have a nap or sit upright to look around. The footrest is adjustable too, so as your child gets taller, they will still be comfortable.

The bumper bar swivels and rotates out of the way if necessary, making it easier to take your child in and out of it – this is particularly great if you’re trying to put a sleeping baby back in the stroller!

It does offer a smooth ride, thanks to the air-filled tires and adjustable suspension system. This is a real focal point of the stroller, and many reviewers speak positively about how smooth it feels to push. Even on bumpier sidewalks, the suspension absorbs a lot of the shocks of dips and cracks in the ground.

The push bar adjusts by pivoting up and down, which makes it really easy to adjust on the go. It also has a soft, leather-like trim, making it comfortable to push. The foot brake system is easy to use, too, even if you’re wearing sandals or flip flops. Push the red dot to stop, and the green dot to go (the brake is located above the right rear wheel).

Ease of Use

The easiest way to fold up the Affinity is to remove the seat first, then collapse the stroller frame. This means it’s not the quickest stroller to collapse, and it can’t really be done one-handed. If you need to be able to quickly collapse it (for example, if you use public transport and need to fold it up), you might struggle with this one.

As it’s on the larger side, it doesn’t fold down into a particularly neat shape (although you can pop the back wheels off to make it a little easier to store). Again, if you live in a small house or apartment, you might struggle to find room for it. Some reviewers found it much easier to keep it unfolded especially if they are using it every day, rather than to keep folding and unfolding it each time.

However, it’s easy to put together straight out of the box, and users report that attaching the car seat and bassinet is simple – it just clicks into place.

It’s designed to be easy to clean – the seat padding comes off easily and is machine washable, which is a real bonus, especially when your child gets to the sticky toddler stage.

Extra Features

The Affinity comes with a decent-sized storage basket – you should be able to fit a good amount of shopping in there. It doesn’t have a smaller storage pocket, which is a shame. It lacks a parent console for your keys, phone, etc. This is a bit of an inconvenience but can be bought separately if it bothers you – if you’re missing a cup holder, you’ll have to buy this separately too.

If you want extra warmth in the winter, you’ll have to buy the Color Pack. It does come with a rain cover, which is great – it fits perfectly and will keep your baby dry even in a downpour, and some strollers don’t include this, so it does save a little bit of money.

Britax offers theft protection in the form of codes printed onto each stroller. If you register your stroller, you can indicate the status of the pushchair. If it’s stolen, for example, and the perpetrator tries to resell it, the potential new owners can see that it is a stolen pushchair. It’s not a perfect system, but it’s an interesting idea. (As a side note, you can click here to check the status of a Britax stroller if you’re planning to buy one-second hand).

Reviews and Awards

affinity design stroller

The Britax Affinity has won the Family Choice Award as well as the National Parenting Publications Award. Reviews are mostly positive. The main things that people enjoy are the comfort and ease of pushing the amazing stroller – it offers a smooth ride thanks to the suspension.

The things that people tend to criticize are the fact that it is bulky when folded, and you have to purchase all the Britax products separately, making it a fairly pricy option if you want to buy the bassinet, car seat, and accessory pack. Reviewers praise this stroller for being sturdy enough to be used for subsequent children, too.

Pros and Cons

Here’s a brief summary of the pros and cons of the Affinity:

Pros

  • Smooth ride thanks to the adjustable suspension
  • The push bar is easy to adjust and works well even if you’re on the petite side
  • Foot brake works really well
  • It’s simple to clean, and the covers are machine washable
  • It has a decent price point considering the quality of materials used

Cons

  • It doesn’t fold up particularly neatly, making it not very suitable for smaller cars, public transport, or small houses or apartments (unless you want to pop the back wheels off)
  • You’ll have to purchase everything separately, even the sunshade and extra seat padding, which is a bit of a shame and definitely bumps the price up a bit
  • It takes a little while to fold it down compared to other strollers on the market
  • No parent console or cup holder

FAQs About Britax Affinity

Do I need an adapter to use my Britax car seat with the Affinity?

No, Britax has designed a Click and Go system which means you don’t need adapters for the bassinet or car seat.

Are there adapters available for other car seats to work with the Affinity?

No, the Affinity is only designed to work with Britax car seats.

Can this stroller be converted to be used as a double stroller?

No, it is a single stroller only – check out this article on Our Top 4 Double Strollers for some good recommendations.

What will I need to pump up the air-filled back tires?

You’ll need a bike pump for to occasionally top up the air in the back tires.

Is the seat comfortable enough for a baby without buying the seat insert?

The seat has some padding, so it’s great for toddlers. If you have a very young baby (say a six-month-old), you’ll probably want the extra comfort that comes with the seat insert (which you can get with the Color Pack).

Can I still get replacement parts for the Affinity even though it’s discontinued?

Yes, you can find replacement parts on their website here.

Is there going to be a newer version of the Affinity?

As far as we can see so far, Britax hasn’t announced any plans to create an updated version of the Affinity.

Conclusion: Britax Affinity Review

The Affinity is a solid choice for a stroller, and we can see why many parents love it so much. The small features like the removable bumper bar and well-designed push bar make it a comfortable choice for both you and your child. For the money, it’s going to last you a long time – which is great if you’re just starting your family and want to use it for subsequent children.

All in all, there’s a lot to like about this stroller. The downsides – like the fact that you really do need the Color Pack to go with it, and the fact that it doesn’t fold up particularly neatly – may put people off (if you’re on a tight budget or if you live in an apartment, for example). It’s also worth noting it’s not particularly easy to carry up and down stairs alone, so if you’re a single parent and you have stairs to navigate, you might want to steer clear.

However, if the above two points don’t matter to you, we would recommend it as a safe and comfortable choice – and there are still plenty of them out there to buy before they sell out!
