FAQs

Question: How Do European Baby Formulas Differ from American Baby Formulas?

Answer: Europe and America have regulations that approve, require, and disallow ingredients. Most of their regulations resemble one another, but some do not. Here are some areas where their regulations differ:

• European regulations ban the use of corn syrups and certain types of sugars, whereas American regulations do not.
• American regulations require more iron and Omega-3 fatty acid DHA in baby formulas than their European counterparts.
• Most European formulas begin with whole milk, whereas American formulas remove the fat from the milk and replace it with fats from plant-based ingredients.
• European formulas offer a wide range of goat’s milk-based formulas, whereas American formulas are mostly cow’s milk-based.
• Most American formulas use corn sugars as a source of carbohydrates, whereas most European formulas use lactose as the main source of carbohydrates.

Question: Which Baby Formula Ingredients Should You Avoid and Why?

Answer: Deciding which formula is best for your baby can feel overwhelming, especially when you read multiple labels of unfamiliar ingredients. This difficult decision can be made a lot easier if you seek to avoid the following questionable ingredients:
• Artificial colorings and flavorings – These may not affect every baby, but some babies have behavioral disorders when they consume them.
• Carrageenan – This thickening agent has caused intestinal inflammation in animal studies.
• Corn syrup – This may add unnecessary calories and sugar to your baby’s diet.
Palm oil – This ingredient may be added into the formula as a source of fat, but its benefits do not outweigh its negative effects. The production of this oil is typically unsustainable and the consumption of this oil by infants may cause a decrease in calcium absorption.

Final Thoughts

After researching these two baby formulas, I am very happy to know that they are both available to new parents. They are both great options. While Kabrita has a great list of ingredients, meets EU food regulation standards, and is a solidly built company with a good heart, the formula is not built for infants.

Because Kabrita’s formula is only approved for toddlers over the age of one year, I didn’t think it was the better option.  If you have a toddler, however, you may want to give it a go.

The more I learned about Bobbie, the more I knew it was for me. It has all the good stuff I want to give my baby, it comes with great customer service, and is conveniently produced in the US. If my little guy was still taking a bottle, I would definitely fill it with Bobbie formula.

Hopefully, this article has given you some insight into many of the European-styled baby formulas available.  Most importantly, though, I hope it has made your decision much easier.
