The Best Sit and Stand Strollers – Our Top Tips & Picks!

While heading outdoors with a baby in tow can be a little tricky, having an inquisitive and curious toddler makes things even harder. Juggling the wants and needs of two children is never going to be easy, but you can make life smoother for yourself with the right equipment. Our guide is designed to help you discover the five best sit and stand strollers.

Sit and stand strollers are simply tandem strollers that have a traditional seat in the front and a stand-up seat with a footstool behind. The great thing about a sit-and-stand stroller is that they cater brilliantly for children with a small age gap of around a few years.

You can safely strap both children in without your older child feeling stifled, which is important as this is the time they’ll start to gain their independence. They’ll be able to view the world around them while being perfectly safe close by. Children get tired too, so it’s a great option if they need a rest after a busy day walking, exploring and learning.

This guide will take care of the best five sit and stand strollers worth investing in right now. We’ve taken an in-depth look at each one to discover the pros, cons and key features of the models that are available to buy online and in-stores.

We hope that by the end of our guide, you’re armed with enough information to go ahead and confidently choose the right one for you and your family.

The Best Sit and Stand Strollers - Our Top Tips & Picks!

Things to Keep In Mind Before You Choose a Sit and Stand Stroller

stroller

You might be completely new to the concept of a sit and stand stroller, or you might have been thinking about purchasing one for a while. Whichever camp you fall into, we’ve got a few handy hints and tips on what to think about before making that all-important purchase.

Where will you use your stroller?

If your daily stroll features smooth surfaces for a stroller to blissfully glide over, then you’re going to be absolutely fine with a sit and stand stroller. This is because they typically have smaller wheels and less suspension to make them lighter and easier to maneuver when you’ve got two children strapped in.

You might face problems on rough and uneven terrain, though. This is because the smaller wheels are less likely to be able to handle the bumpy road. If you need something tougher and more durable, opt for an all-terrain stroller.

Would a double stroller be more suitable?

If your children are closer in age or body frame, or if you have an older child who tends to tire more easily, it might be worth looking into getting a double stroller instead. These strollers have two seats that sit next to each other, so you can strap both children in and get to your final destination without having to worry about a wandering toddler.

They are a bit heavier and bulkier, which is something you need to factor in, but they’re slightly better for rougher terrain. It’s definitely worth looking into if you’re unsure and want to learn more.

Consider the cost

Cost is going to be a factor with absolutely anything you buy, and a sit and stand stroller won’t be any different. You can find a reliable model for around $120 plus, so it’s definitely worth setting your budget as close to this figure as possible.

Of course, you can find cheaper models and there are more expensive varieties too – higher-end models tend to retail at $500. However, when investing in such an important piece of equipment you’re going to want it to last. Choose a budget that works for you and factor this into your search.

The Caboose Ultralight is an update from the Caboose Sit and Stand Stroller. Joovy has shaved off 4lbs from the original model, using a compact frame and lightweight aircraft-grade aluminum to make it incredibly light and easy to push – perfect if you’ve got two children in tow.

Unlike its predecessor, it comes with a whole host of handy features, including a canopy for the rear of the stroller to keep your child protected from the sun. There’s also a parent organizer with pockets and two cup holders, and a removable child tray. To make life easier, there’s also a universal car adapter that works with almost any car seat.

One of the only downsides to the stroller is that it can come up a bit long when it’s folded down. This shouldn’t cause you any problems, but if you have a really small car then this could prove tricky.

The Baby Trend Sit N Stand Stroller is one of the more popular and well known strollers out there. They invented this 2-in-1 trend, and as a result remains one of the market leaders today. Not only does it offer a generous 50lb weight limit, but you can keep your baby secured with the 5-point safety harness, foot-activated dual-rear parking brake and locking wheels.

The best thing about this stroller is that it’s completely versatile. You can place the infant seat on the back of the stroller for greater visibility of your youngest child, in turn allowing them to see you and feel closer to their mom. Or if you want your oldest child standing on the back, you can take the seat off and utilize the foot bench.

It is a bit bulkier and larger than other strollers, and it’s not quite so easy to use, but otherwise it’s a solid model that should last you years.

While one of the more expensive sit and stand strollers on the market, the Chicco BravoFor2 is a great stroller for slightly older children. The biggest plus side about it is that it works seamlessly with any KeyFit car seat, slotting perfectly into the front seat. However, many parents have complained that once their child outgrows the seat, it becomes quite uncomfortable and difficult to recline.

Overall, it drives very well with full suspension and front swivels, but if weighed down too much the Chicco stroller can become a little stiff. There are one-touch brakes to keep the stroller firmly in place when parked and once the stroller is folded down, the fold handle becomes a carry handle to help make life easier when moving it around.

Pros and cons:

Pros

Cons

Premium build quality

It’s expensive

Easily collapses to fold

Can be difficult to handle

Features storage for parents to utilize

The front seat has difficulty reclining once your child grows

Graco is a brand you can rely on for all sorts of baby needs, and where they’ve come up with trumps with their sit and stand stroller. While more expensive than others on our list, it’s a well-built, reliable stroller that can be counted on when you need it most.

It can be used in multiple ways, and the rear seat can be faced towards you so you can keep your eye on your youngest child. The rear stand is incredibly sturdy, so when your eldest needs to rest just pop them on there for a while.

The downside of this stroller is that it’s a lot heavier than other models, so you might have some difficulty if you’re on your own with the little ones. It also folds down fairly large and won’t fit into the trunks of smaller cars very easily (if at all). This one might be best if you have a larger car.

Pros and cons:

Pros

Cons

Features a rear-facing seat for your baby

It’s quite heavy

Generous weight allowance

It folds down pretty large and struggles to fit in some trunks

We can’t hide the fact that the Baby Jogger City Select LUX stroller is incredibly expensive, but it’s already very highly rated so it definitely deserves a mention. The reason it’s so pricey is because of its versatility.

It’s actually a regular stroller that can convert to a sit and stand by attaching the rear bench seat. This makes it more of an investment as you can tailor the stroller to suit you and your children’s needs at the time.

It can also be used with pretty much any car seat or bassinet, and runs really smoothly because of its large wheels. The downside is that it doesn’t come with very many additional accessories including parent packs or cup holders. All other strollers on this list has extra space for all the valuables. It’s also a bit heavy, and the hand brakes can be a little hard to use.

Pros and cons:

Pros

Cons

Super versatile and converts into a sit and stand stroller

Very expensive

It maneuvers very well

The weight limit is slightly lower than other models

There’s a decent hand brake and the suspension works well

FAQ’s About Sit and Stand Strollers

How does a sit and stand stroller work?”

The name definitely gives it away; one child (the younger or smaller of the two) is able to sit at the front in a traditional forward-facing seat. The older or larger child is able to stand behind this using the chunky footrest and upright seat to keep them in place.

What is the weight limit on a sit and stand stroller?

It’s a little tricky to say as most stroller manufacturers have their own weight limit that you should always check beforehand. However, as a general rule of thumb, most strollers can take around 40lbs on the front and rear. Some do offer more though depending on the materials used.

When can a baby start to face forward in a stroller?

Until your baby is around 6-9 months, you’re going to want them to face you for comfort and security. After that, you can start facing them forwards in your stroller as they’ll want to start observing the world and develop their senses.

The verdict: Which sit and stand stroller is best?

While we’d be happy to recommend any sit and stand stroller on this list, our clear winner has to be the Joovy Caboose Ultralight Stand On Tandem Stroller. They’ve really learnt from their previous design and have used some of the more popular elements from that to perfect their model. It’s so light and easy to use, and uses top quality materials to give it a hard-wearing finish. If you’ve got two children in tow and are heading out on your own, it’s not going to let you down.

A close second is the Baby Trend Sit N Stand Stroller – an affordable model that keeps versatility at the heart of what they do. You can use it as a traditional sit and stand or you can flip it around slightly so that your youngest child faces in your direction. If you’re looking for a little more flexibility, this is the one to go for.
